Since 2009, he has been a member of the band ‘Heavytones,’ the TV Total band! He has performed with numerous stars such as Lionel Richie, Jamie Cullum, and most recently Herbert Grönemeyer. Thorsten also hosts his own ‘Sax Bootcamps’ and is a Yamaha endorser.

Singer, trumpeter, and composer, Artistic Director of the POP.NONSTOP ACADEMY and the JBBG-Jazz Bigband Graz.

Who’s It For?
This program welcomes advanced-level students, music educators, professional musicians, and dedicated hobbyists.

POP HORN SECTION WORKSHOP
How do horns work in pop music? What do pop producers want to hear? What does the song need? How can a horn section navigate the fine line between complex jazz and uninspired long tones? Thorsten and Horst-Michael explore these and other questions in their workshops, offering insights into the role of a horn section in a pop setting. Participants will collaboratively arrange horn parts for different styles and songs while refining their sense of ensemble playing and phrasing. The workshop also delves into soloing in pop music: How do horn players improvise over pop tracks? How much jazz influence is appropriate? And how can you create an engaging solo with minimal tonal material? Beyond that, Thorsten and Horst-Michael provide hands-on advice for trumpeters, saxophonists, and trombonists on instrument selection, microphone techniques, in-ear monitoring, as well as live and studio performance.

8:30 AM – 9:00 AM: Morning session
10:00 AM – 12:30 PM: Instrument group coaching
2:00 PM – 4:30 PM: Band/ensemble
Evening events include open stages, faculty concerts, and jam sessions.
Thursday Highlight: A boat cruise with a jam session!
Friday Highlight: Final concert at 8:00 PM followed by a farewell jam.
